Blog Entry 9: Digital Storytelling: An Alternative Instructional Approach

In this article, Dr. Ruben R. Puentedura discusses the different uses for digital storytelling and demonstrates how to effectively create a digital story by building on a systematic process that allows individuals to tell their stories and introducing elements of story branching and interactivity (Smith, 2008, p. 2). First, Dr. Puentedura identifies seven narrative elements that need to be present in a multimedia story:
· A point (of view)
· A dramatic question
· Emotional content
· The gift of your voice
· The power of the soundtrack
· Economy
· Pacing

Dr. Puentedura states that these seven elements combined with basic instruction on using digital tools will ensure that individuals will have a solid foundation for digital storytelling (2008).
The article also includes a chart that addresses a series of stages that give a newcomer to digital storytelling a progressively deeper understanding of the stage by completing a task. Each stage and/or task builds on the previous one and is accompanied by software to help the individual implement it. According to the chart, digital storytelling “newbies” need to first acquire skills for image assembly, followed by sequential art, moving images, interactive media, and interactive fiction (2008, p. 3). The approach is used so as not to overwhelm a first time digital movie maker. The article concludes by stating that this approach is not the only way to introduce digital storytelling to individuals but seems to be effective in individuals learning the process to make it applicable to everyday life.

  1. Students would benefit by watching some videos and analyzing these different elements. I've found that if students can identify elements in someone else's work, then they are more successful at creating it.
