Blog Entry 6: New Technology that Promotes Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Digital Storytelling in the Classroom demonstrated many ways to engage students in critical thinking and problem solving skills. I think the use of digital storytelling can really get students to become actively engaged. The subject that comes to mind is Social Studies. Generally, students aren't crazy to learn about history. I think digital storytelling presents information in a way that interests the students and gives them a visual aid in which to connect the information. Posing questions on a Movie Maker presentation using either text or audio allows students to engage in problem solving skills. I think that presenting information using a digital story format is a much more effective method than simply reading to engage students in critical thinking and problem solving skills because it adheres to all of their senses.

  1. Do you think that younger students don't like history lessons because they lack prior knowledge and abstract thinking skills to envision what teachers are trying to convey? If so, then DST helps to fill those voids --- students can see on a video what they can't imagine by reading a text or even by seeing images. The combination of images, video, sound, and storytelling provides a broader context for the historical facts.
