Blog Turnover: Entry A
Completing this blogging experience has really opened my eyes to the usefulness of blogs in education. I realize that it can serve multiple purposes in the classroom. For instance, a teacher can have student set up their own blog, much like we did in this class, and post weekly entries about chapter readings. Teachers could also set up a class blog for a particular unit the class will be completing. During the unit, students will be expected to visit the blog daily, weekly, etc. and post comments on the proposed entry. Blogs could also be extremely instrumental in teaching students the art of reflection. Blogging promotes writing for students and the use of technology in the classroom and at home. I think using blogs in the classroom will demonstrate to teachers that students who would not otherwise complete assignments that they can become actively engaged in the curriculum. Blogging promotes higher order thinking skills among students and allows them to demonstrate this in their writing without having to write a formal essay. The most surprising aspect of blogging in the education was the versatility. Before this experience, it was hard for me to wrap my head around how it could be used for anything other than an online diary. Now I realize that the possibilities are endless when it comes to uses for blogs in the classroom.

Regarding your "not having to write a formal essay" comment ---- I think blogging could enrich a student's formal essay b/c dialoguing with others would help him to discover more to say and give him practice saying it before he got to the formal essay. Studies show that as a person writes, he will have more to write than if he just sits waiting for the whole essay to pop into his head. HOWEVER, some students have a hard time getting started on an essay, so blogging might provide that "first step."
