Blog Entry 10: eLearning

There are many digital tools that support student eLearning. Before reading about eLearning, I assumed it consisted of communication that is done solely online. After reading the chapter and identifying many eLearning tools, I realized that eLearning is any method that enhances student learning through the use of technology. Two of my favorite eLearning tools include GoogleDocs and Discovery Education. I feel like these two eLearning tools are extremely useful in a hybrid, blended, or mixed-mode class. Being a first time GoogleDocs user this semester, I have really seen the benefits of it. The easy access GoogleDocs provides to students to collaborate online could easily be used in grade-levels as low as middle school. I think at this stage, in today's technologically advanced society, students are ready at this point to collaborate online using this tool. The tool the text discussed that I use most frequently is Discovery Education (http://www.unitedstreaming.com/). Teaching 5th grade social studies last year and 3rd-5th grade Special Education this year, Discovery Education has provided and continues to provide filtered educational videos/images that support instruction. I have found that using this tool has improved student engagement in my classes. After the study on eLearning, I see now more than ever how it can be used in any instructional setting.

  1. I just was offered a job on Friday at a school that has great technology, so I am very eager to start with some tools like United Streaming. Also, the principal told me that probably only 7% of students at this school don't have at-home access to a computer. If they don't already have accounts set up for home use, I will definitely be suggesting google docs to my students.
